Go now, minister tells ‘politically linked’ civil servants

Kulasegaran says many of the political appointees in the civil service are not qualified.

Some 17,000 politically linked civil servants will be affected in Putrajaya’s bid to reduce government expenditure.

PETALING JAYA: Human Resource Minister M Kulasegaran has reaffirmed the government’s decision to axe some 17,000 civil servants, saying they are political appointees who were hired not for their talents but for their political links

“They were hired because they have political links, not because they are qualified.

“For example, there are one or two people in my ministry appointed to the board, who do not have specific qualifications, it is because they have things to do with political parties.

“I think this must change, at least give others the chance,” he told reporters today.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the government would axe some 17,000 civil servants who are political appointees, as part of efforts to reduce government expenditure.

Kula said it would be ridiculous if the political appointees decided to stay on.

“After the May 9, it is no longer the old government, but the new one,” he said, adding that people with talents should be given priority in the civil service. -FMT
