Two seats for Chow as Guan Eng plans Penang ‘succession’

GE14 | Though seemingly at odds with the party's policy of not fielding candidates in more than one seat, Penang DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow will be an exception for “succession planning,” according to caretaker chief minister and party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
It was announced yesterday that besides defending his Padang Kota state seat, Chow replace incumbent Ng Wei Aik in the Tanjong parliamentary seat for the 14th general election.
The party had decided before the last polls – on the advice of late chairperson Karpal Singh – to not allow its candidates to stand in more than one seat.
Karpal had only made an exception for the chief minister, saying that anyone who assumes the post should also attend parliamentary proceedings to address issues related to the state.
In 2016, Lim had stated that Chow should assume the Penang chief minister’s post should the former be convicted in his graft case.
When asked today on the exception for the caretaker senior state exco, Lim said: "There must be preparations done in our succession planning, that is why he has been given two seats to contest.
"Being a parliamentarian would make it be easier for him to handle matters related to the state government at the federal level.
"Whether we like it or not, we have to deal with the federal government," he said.
Lim also expressed hope that the federal-state situation would be easier to deal with if Pakatan Harapan wins Putrajaya after May 9.
"I know the burden will increase for Chow, and he will suffer from a lack of sleep, but that is how it is for a senior exco and future CM," he said.
‘I never left’
On his impending return to the seat he won in 1999 and held until 2013, Chow said: "I have never really left it.
“I just have to work harder now to ensure we win in both seats,” he told reporters after the candidate announcement yesterday.
When asked whether the ‘succession plan’ had to do with Lim eyeing a federal cabinet post in the case of a Harapan win, Chow noted that the plan probably had to do more with the consequences of Lim’s graft case.
For its GE14 lineup, Penang DAP is dropping six of its incumbents – including two MPs and two state excos – with eight new faces coming on board.
Chow said this was just a "natural process."
"The DAP leadership met with every candidate and those who are not fielded to explain the party's decision.
"Those who were dropped understand and accept their situation. Some have even contacted the new candidates to hand over their machinery.
"We hope the election machinery can continue as normal despite the changes," he added.
Chow also said that DAP’s road to GE14 has been challenging since day one, when federal opposition parties decided to regroup as Pakatan Harapan.
"It was also not easy when we decided on former premier and Bersatu chairperson as the prime ministerial candidate, but no challenge is greater than wanting to save Malaysia.
"Some of these issues would need explanation and we have already been doing that across the country," he said. - Mkini
