Fahmi: GST will be ‘giant killer’ in Lembah Pantai

The PKR communications director says voters in the constituency who don't earn much are feeling the impact of the consumption tax.

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR’s Fahmi Fadzil said the controversial goods and services tax (GST) will give the opposition the edge in Lembah Pantai.
The party’s communications director, who is tipped to replace incumbent Nurul Izzah Anwar as Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) candidate in Lembah Pantai, said this was because there was a lot of unhappiness over the tax among the voters in the parliamentary constituency.
“And Raja Nong Chik will be defending the GST, while we want to get rid of it.
“Which one will the rakyat choose?” he told FMT, referring to former minister Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, who was named as Barisan Nasional’s candidate for Lembah Pantai this morning.
Fahmi said many in Lembah Pantai were earning between RM1,200 and RM1,500 and the 6% GST rate had added to their financial burden.
“So, the GST will make anyone anywhere a giant killer,” he said.
Fahmi also said that anyone who replaced the popular Nurul Izzah would be an underdog against Raja Nong Chik.
In the last general election, Nurul Izzah defeated Raja Nong Chik and independent Rusli Baba with a 1,847-vote majority after securing 31,008 votes.
Raja Nong Chik secured 29,161 votes. - FMT
