Ex-finance minister Daim promises to assist Harapan if it forms gov't

GE14 | Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin has pledged to assist the Pakatan Harapan federal government if the opposition coalition wins the coming general election, according to veteran newsman Abdul Kadir Jasin.
In a blog posting, the former New Straits Times group editor-in-chief said he accompanied the elusive Umno veteran to meet with Harapan's machinery in Langkawi, Kedah, yesterday.
Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is a close associate of Daim, is set to contest the Langkawi parliamentary seat.
Mahathir is also the opposition coalition's choice for prime minister.
“Perhaps there are those who have forgotten that Daim twice served as finance minister under Mahathir, and he was also the first chairperson of Langkawi's Development Authority (Lada).
"He (Daim) has promised to contribute his knowledge and experience to assist a Harapan government after this GE14, Insya Allah," said Kadir.
Daim had served two terms as finance minister in Mahathir's administration from 1984 to 1991, and 1999 to 2001, before retreating from active involvement in politics.
Last December, in one of his rare public appearances, Daim spoke at a forum organised by a PKR-linked NGO and later told reporters that he hoped to remain in retirement after GE14.
Unlike several other Umno veterans who have spoken out against caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, Daim had kept a low-profile since retiring from active politics.
As for himself, Kadir (photo) said the Registrar of Societies (ROS)'s temporary dissolution order on Bersatu would not deter him from being directly involved in the election process.
"This is a personal landmark for me as this would be the first time I am directly involved in a general election," added the Bersatu supreme council member.
In the past few weeks, Kadir said he had gone to Pahang, Perak, Kedah, and Malacca to campaign for Harapan candidates and assist the respective state machinery. - Mkini
