CPM leader Shamsiah's granddaughter is DAP's pick for Bandar Utama

GE14 | DAP will be fielding former Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) leader Shamsiah Fakeh's grandaughter Jamaliah Jamaluddin for the Bandar Utama state seat in Selangor.
Bandar Utama was formerly known as Damansara Utama, whose incumbent Yeo Bee Yin will be contesting the Bakri parliamentary seat in Johor this time around.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Jamaliah denied that her late grandmother's role in CPM would prove to be an obstacle.
“No. It would not be a burden. I see her as someone who fought for the nation and had sacrificed so much. She is my idol and inspiration,” she said.
Jamaliah, 29, also explained that she chose DAP because of its principles and ideology.
“I especially love the concept of 'Malaysian Malaysia'. I feel that we don't just talk about this, but we really want and hope that one day, there would be something that is for all Malaysians.
“They (DAP) are persistent in what they do. I really think they are a good party and I want to join them to help and fight BN.
“We need change this time. The other candidates and I would do our best to win this battle and hopefully, we can create a better Malaysia,” added the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) councillor.
On issues which she feels strongly about, Jamaliah said she would want to work towards eradicating racism in Malaysia.
“Racism is a serious issue. I hope one day, there would be no racism and we would have a country that is really 'Malaysian Malaysia',” she added.
Jamaliah said there are certain quarters, who in order to seek attention or divert an issue, tend to stoke racial tension, which is detrimental to the nation.
Debates and arguments, she emphasised, should be focused on policies and not race.
“So this is one area in which I hope to contribute as it is the issue which is closest to my heart,” she added. - Mkini
