GEORGE TOWN: The Permatang Rawa mini-stadium in Bukit Mertajam will get a new lease of life with a RM3.5 million upgrade that includes the installation of an artificial turf from Italy.
In what is dubbed a 4P — public, private, people, professional —partnership, the Penang government and AEI International Berhad (AEI) have agreed to rehabilitate the abandoned stadium.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the upgrade will include a new football field with artificial turf, a multi-purpose tennis court, clubhouse facilities and the construction of five new futsal courts.

He said the Penang government will pay RM2.4 million, while the remaining RM1.1 million will be borne by AEI, a company that is involved in the promotion, facilitation and development of the halal industry in the state.
Lim said the five new futsal courts would be fully funded by AEI.
The Permatang Rawa mini stadium has been in a state of disrepair for more than 10 years.
Since 2008, there had been reports of looting at the stadium with fixtures and fittings, including copper wires, steel bars and taps, being stolen. The items were believed to have been sold to scrap dealers.
The stadium is located close to the Central Seberang Perai district police headquarters in the township of Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam. -FMT
