Harapan to launch anti-GST campaign on April 1

Pakatan Harapan's presidential council has decided to launch an anti-GST campaign on April 1, the third anniversary of the tax introduced by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
The campaign is themed “Rakyat Tolak GST (People Reject GST)”.
“Starting today, we encourage the public to post receipts of their purchases on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as a sign of protest against the GST with the hashtags #RakyatTolakGST or #PeoplevsGST,” the council said in a statement this afternoon.
On the ground, the council urged leaders, activists and potential election candidates to organise activities in their respective areas.
Among the programmes suggested are social media campaign, flashmobs, ceramah (talk sessions) and other creative activities.
Yesterday, Harapan chairperson and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad argued that Malaysia had witnessed development without the need for GST during his tenure.
Mahathir also argued that GST contributed to the cost of living ballooning, which is burdening those from the lower and middle-income brackets.
“It is certain that the cost of living would lessen if GST is abolished," he added.
According to Mahathir, abolishing GST would not affect the administration and development of the nation.
"If GST is needed today, it is because a lot of government funds have been misused and wasted. This misuse increases as the general election draw closer," he claimed.
Responding to this, BN strategic communications department deputy director Eric See-To claimed that Malaysia, during Mahathir's tenure, did not need GST as it had other sources of funds, many of which were not available now. -Mkini
