Time for opposition to accept economy doing well: Salleh

David Dass: Yes, there are good things about the economy. But the erosion in the value of our currency is fact, not fiction. And the increase in the cost of living is fact, not fiction. The level of household debt is also fact, not fiction.

And there are serious concerns over the level of government debt. Added to that are concerns about governance and China-funded projects.

The continued dalliance by the government with those who push for hudud law and an Islamic state is also worrying.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak is right. We must be resilient. Our policies and practices should bring us together, not tear us apart.

Newday: Salleh, it is always fun to play with macroeconomic figures.

As other commenters in Malaysiakini have said - it is what is happening at the microeconomic level that matters most to citizens.

You can get pats on the back from organisations outside Malaysia, but they have no idea what is happening here - our day-to-day struggle to put food on the table. You, Salleh, also appear to have no idea, otherwise you would not be saying this.

Prices of food, fuel, tolls, train fares, power, and water have all risen. These things are causing major concern, but you are oblivious - or choose to ignore - this daily reality for the vast majority of Malaysians.

You champion our economy, and in so doing, you endorse the extreme leakages and wastage at all levels of government. You ignore the auditor-general’s annual report time and again.

The old saying is that "the rich get richer and the poor get the picture". Very true indeed.

Honest: Say what you want, but normal Malaysians know what we’re going through.

We don’t need you, Malaysian Official 1 (MO1), the 43 international World Trade Organisation (WTO) members, or even opposition leaders to tell us how much more difficult it is to live in Malaysia.

Eagle: During this Chinese New Year (CNY), I went to buy shirts at Metro. I could hardly see customers there. I asked the salesgirl about CNY shopping. She said, “Kurang banyak.” Apparently after CNY, her stall will close and she will have to move to another shopping complex.

Even shopkeepers complain they could hardly sell their beers and soft drinks. Sales of oranges are slow.

Times are bad. Things are expensive. Our politicians are talking nonsense. They must be rich because they don't seem to feel the pain.

Pakatan Harapan takes ROS to court

Vijay47: There is no one, except perhaps Salleh and MIC's S Subramaniam, who believes that the Registrar of Societies (ROS) is acting in the manner expected and demanded of a government body. Nor does anyone believe that anything worthwhile will emerge from this civil suit.

But Pakatan Harapan has no choice; it cannot take things lying down, it has to fight even though we all know that the battle will be futile.

It is again to our national shame that yet another public agency refuses to be even minimally fair in deciding on the due application by an association for registration, bearing in mind that the victims would have bent backwards to ensure that they complied with all requirements however unjust or ill-founded they might be.

Either way, this suit will bring no comfort, the ROS is likely to delay matters further, or to reject the application on unknown grounds. Our elegant desperate gentleman will ensure that in no way is the formidable hope against him given official recognition. That is, until after the elections.

Kangkung: What's the use to sue ROS? It's a waste of time and money. The courts will only bin the suit or before it is heard, the 14th general election (GE14) will be over.

Registering Harapan as a formal coalition is the final nail on the Umno government's coffin, and the ROS will not let that happen. The ROS is dragging its feet as it knows if it does that long enough, GE14 will be over.

Newday: If Harapan fails to obtain ROS registration before GE14, just form the coalition after the GE14 results.

If you, as separate parties, can get enough seats to form government, ROS application forms would not be required by then.

Jamal gives RM7b 'mock' cheque to Bersatu

Cogito Ergo Sum: Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos, you mean you donated RM7 billion to a rival political party? If I was an Umno member, I would demand that you be sacked immediately.

And by the way, how did you come by such a huge fortune? Selling ikan bakar? As suggested, MACC and the Income Tax Department must swing into action.

VGV: Jamal, you don't have to blow your trumpet so loud that people have second thoughts of your sincerity in your donation. Leave Bersatu alone and let them handle their party matters themselves.

Myviews: Umno leaders better sit up. This chap is doing more harm to the party than top party leaders care to think.

The stupidity of his antics brings into question why top party leaders condone such nonsense, especially when his actions, so near to GE14, drives away fence-sitter voters.

The grassroots are telling the top leaders the real situation on the ground but they don't seem to listen or care.- Mkini
