Najib: We won’t allow attempts to sabotage Malaysia-China ties

PM calls stories about Chinese nationals buying property in Forest City getting ICs and China-Kuantan Industrial Park being off limits to Malaysians, lies that can sow distrust.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Barisan Nasional government will not allow any attempts to undermine Malaysia and China’s strong bilateral ties.

Prime Minister Najib Razak said relations between both countries were in the right direction and flourishing well in all sectors.

However, he said, some opposition leaders were trying to confuse and sow hatred among the people by accusing the government of surrendering the country’s sovereignty to China.

Citing Chinese nationals who bought property in Forest City, Johor, which the opposition had alleged would be getting Malaysia citizenship, and the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park, which is said to be off limits to Malaysians, Najib said these lies were meant to sow distrust between Malaysia and China.

“In fact, our previous leader said if the opposition comes into power, they will cancel all contracts with China.

“We cannot allow this. If the opposition takes over, relationship with China will deteriorate,” he said at the Huazong Chinese New Year open house at Wisma Huazong in Seri Kembangan near here, today.

Also present were Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor, Huazong president Pheng Yin Huah, MCA president Liow Tiong Lai, Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong, China ambassador to Malaysia Bai Tian, as well as 1,000 members of the Chinese community and business leaders.

Huazong is the umbrella body for some 118 Chinese guilds and associations nationwide.

Special links with China

The prime minister also assured that under his leadership, Malaysia-China bilateral relations would continue to be further strengthened.

He said the BN government had, from early on through his father the late Abdul Razak Hussein, recognised the importance of establishing special links with China, and by forging diplomatic ties with China in 1974, the decision had brought mutual benefits not just for the Chinese community here, but Malaysia as a whole.

He said the relationship continued to flourish and that even China President Xi Jinping had remarked that Malaysia-China relations was today at an all-time high.

On another note, Najib reaffirmed his commitment that the present government under his leadership would continue to provide political and economic stability for all Malaysians to prosper.

“As your prime minister, I pledge to continue to be fair, moderate and inclusive, so we will develop Malaysia together,” he said, noting that relationship between the various ethnic communities in the country will continue to be the important facet of its political system and Malaysian way of life.

He said this was evident when Malaysia achieved 5.9% growth last year, while inflation and unemployment were kept low.

He also assured that the Chinese community would not be deprived of access to Chinese education and the government would allow the opening up of more Chinese schools, where the need arose. -FMT
