PETALING JAYA — In the spirit of muhibbah, the Tun Abdul Aziz Mosque in Section 14 here threw a Chinese New Year party for the local community today in conjunction with its 41st anniversary.
While some mosques and surau have opened their doors to non-Muslims in recent times — most notably in Penang last year when drenched residents sought relief from floodwaters — the Section 14 mosque nicknamed “Masjid Bulat” might be the first to hold Lunar New Year celebrations on its premises.
According to a poster posted on the mosque’s Facebook page, the celebration was aimed at bridging Muslim and non-Muslim ties.

The mosque also gave away ang pows, the customary red packets wishing luck, good health and prosperity to visitors and even took non-Muslims on a tour of their religious sanctuary.
Visitors also tossed a yee sang dish together at the Dato’ Abdul Wabah Majid hall where large round tables decked in festive red clothes were arranged for guests.
According to the mosque’s Facebook page, a forum titled “Rich and successful Chinese” with two Chinese Muslims, academics Noraishah Chua and Muhd Fuad Yeoh, among the speakers on the panel today.
The Masjid Bulat celebrated its anniversary this year over four days, from February 22 to 25, with a series of lectures and community activities.
The mosque named after former Selangor mentri besar Tun Abdul Aziz Majid, got its nickname for its circular design when it was completed in 1977.
