Child sex abuse: Vicious circle not a myth, but…

A psychologist cautions against generalising, saying the public must avoid attaching a stigma to victims.
child-sex-trade-abuse-1PETALING JAYA: A clinical psychologist has urged caution against the stigmatising of child sex abuse survivors as potential abusers themselves.
Evelyn Soong of Milestone Psychological Services told FMT she was concerned that the public would be misled by studies that point to perpetrators having been abused when they were young.
She acknowledged that the victim-to-perpetrator cycle was not a myth, but said this did not mean that every victim would become a perpetrator.
“There are some reported studies of perpetrators turning out to have had histories of being sexually victimised during their own childhood, but this is not always the case,” she said.
“The notion of the victim-to-perpetrator cycle should be treated with caution to avoid stigmatisation.”
She said the experience of sexual abuse at a young age would indeed put a survivor at risk of continuing the cycle, especially in the presence of other risk factors such as low self-esteem and lack of emotional and social support.
However, she added, the risk could easily be dealt with by early identification and intervention.
“There must also be an availability of important adults in the child’s life besides the abusers. Also very important is a strong faith or exposure to religious teachings that stress positive development and forgiveness.”
She said good sexual knowledge at the onset of the abuse could also prevent the victim-to-perpetrator cycle from starting or continuing.
Evelyn’s remarks followed a news report about four foreign teenagers who had been forced into the sex trade after entering Sabah with their families in search of work.
The four, three girls and a boy, were rescued in a raid on an entertainment outlet in Cybercity near Kota Kinabalu on Feb 7.
The report quoted Kota Kinabalu police chief M Chandra as saying that the victims, who worked as guest relations personnel, were forced to provide sexual services to clients upon request.
The girls are aged 15, 17 and 18 and the boy is 16. -FMT
