MTEM: Dress code not relevant to performance

Whether a worker covers their aurat (Muslim modesty) or not is irrelevant to their performance, said the Malay Economic Action Council (MTEM).
MTEM chief executive Ahmad Yazid Othman said as such, workers discriminated against based on their dress code can make formal complaints to the authorities.
"It is not relevant whether clothes that cover the aurat (Muslim modesty) or not affects best services.
"They should make complaints so that the issue can be raised to a higher level," Yazid (photo) said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

He was asked about the dress codes for flight attendants such as Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia.
This came after the controversy following news that Muslim women working as frontline hotel staff were prohibited from wearing a hijab (headscarf).
The National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (Nufam) had previously raised the matter of allowing female flight attendants a hijab option in 2014.
It is unclear whether MAS or AirAsia's dress code has changed since then.
Commenting further on workplace discrimination, Yazid said it is high time for the government to introduce an anti-discrimination labour law, which will protect all Malaysians.
"This is so that no one can discriminate against someone simply because of their race or religion," he said.- Mkini
