Johor convict not member of royalty, says palace

Rahim-Ramli-Nick-Tazuddin1

PETALING JAYA: The Johor Council of Royal Court has released an official statement denying that Tunku Nick Tazuddin Izwan Syah Tunku Qadir is a member of the Johor royal family.
The statement referred to reports by Bernama and Kosmo! yesterday that a member of the Johor royal family was given a lesser jail sentence of two years and fined RM10,000 after the Court of Appeal upheld his conviction for voluntarily causing hurt to national boxer Muhammad Farkhan Mohd Haron five years ago.
Council president Abdul Rahim Ramli said the privilege and power to appoint and include a person or persons as a member of the Johor royal family was vested in the sovereign as provided for under Article 7 (2) (e) of the Second Part of the Johor State Constitution of 1895.
“The alleged person was never appointed, recognised or included in the royalty list.
“A royal decree of 1922 categorically excludes persons not appointed by the sovereign under the said article from being recognised as royalty,” Rahim said in the statement.
This is not the first time the council has released a statement denying the “royal status” of an individual.
On Sept 22, the council released a statement denying that Tunku Alang Reza Tunku Ibrahim, who was charged on Sept 21 at the Petaling Jaya Magistrate’s Court with possessing drugs and drug abuse, was a member of the Johor royal household.
Tunku Alang Reza, who died in a road accident in Mersing on Oct 27, made headlines after he was arrested, along with six others, over the death of Estonian model Regina Soosalu on Pulau Rawa, off Mersing, in July 2014. -FMT
