Farmer’s arrest: MCA leaders should apologise too, says Kit Siang

DAP parliamentary leader says MCA division leader David Choi did the right thing in apologising to the farmer, even though he was subsequently stripped of his party position.
lim-kit-siang-mcaPETALING JAYA: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang today applauded the move by an MCA division leader who was stripped of his party position after apologising to a farmer, urging the MCA national leadership to follow his example and apologise as well.
The farmer was arrested for sharing a video deemed insulting to MCA Youth chief and Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon, who had taken aim at Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng following the historic floods on Nov 4 and 5.
Speaking at MCA’s 64th annual general assembly on Nov 5, Chong said Guan Eng was not “as powerful as he claims to be in solving the flood problem” despite being “deity-like”.
Chong subsequently apologised for his remarks.
The farmer, however, was remanded for two days for sharing the Facebook Live video.
Pahang MCA division leader David Choi apologised to the farmer on Wednesday following his release from remand.
According to the China Press, Choi was subsequently stripped of all party positions in the Indera Mahkota division, including his post as public complaints bureau chief and chief of the 14th general election operation room.
In a speech at the DAP kopitiam dialogue at Pasar Taman Cempaka, Ipoh, Kit Siang said although Choi had been punished by his party superiors, he had done the right thing in apologising for the injustice suffered by the farmer.
He also called on social media users to practise a high standard of responsibility and not to believe everything that appeared on the internet.
“Furthermore, everyone must exercise discretion and not cause anyone to become victims of abuse of power,” he said. -FMT
