Group protests at Dr M's office over 'Bugis slur'

A group which represents the Bugis community in Peninsula Malaysia today held a short protest at Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad's office in Putrajaya today over the alleged slur against their community today.
According to Bernama, the group gathered for about 30 minutes and urged Mahathir to withdraw his remark which alleged he had linked the Bugis community with piracy.
"Police reports will be lodged throughout the country if Mahathir refuses to withdraw his statement and apologise for hurting the feelings of the Bugis community which has long been a part of Malaysian society.
"The racist statement is unacceptable and we will make sure the entire Bugis community does not support Mahathir and his party when the time comes (election time)," said the group's spokesperson.
The group was referring to Mahathir's speech at the "Anti-kleptocracy rally" on Saturday where he made reference to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's Bugis ancestry.
"Maybe he can trace his ancestry to Bugis pirates. Somehow, he lost his way and came to Malaysia. Go home to Bugis (Sulawesi)!" said Mahathir, as many in the crowd cheered with agreement.

The rally was aimed at protesting against Putrajaya's inaction over the 1MDB, which is the subject of investigations by various jurisdictions abroad. Among others, 1MDB is the subject of the FBI's Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative.
Court filings by the US Department of Justice claimed that funds originating from 1MDB ended up in the account of an unnamed "Malaysian Official 1".
Mahathir has repeatedly accused Najib of having a role in 1MDB's woes and questioned the source of the billions received in in donations from a "Saudi donor". -Mkini
