PAS wants Penang gov’t probed for the massive floods

Penang PAS has lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on the state's alleged environmental destruction that resulted in the Sept 15 massive floods after heavy rainfall.
State PAS environmental committee chairperson Saiful Lizan Mohd Yusof said the party was lodging a report with MACC in line with the commission's efforts to fight abuse of power and corruption related to the environment and the floods.
"On April 3, the MACC set up the Environmental Protection and Anti-Corruption Caucus (EPACC) to eliminate corruption and abuse of power on environmental issues," said Saiful Lizan, who is a former councillor with the Penang Island City Council.
"The MACC is serious in fighting abuse of power and corruption in this matter and so we are lodging this report to ask them to investigate if this has happened in Penang," he added.
"We lodge this report on behalf of all Penangites against the state government on the state of Penang's environment, which eventually led to floods."
Last Saturday, Penang PAS lodged a police report at the Northeast District police headquarters on Jalan Patani, claiming that ad hoc development and deforestation caused the massive floods on the island, not a typhoon.

Saiful Lizan had then called for development projects to be approved only after ensuring there was proper drainage infrastructure in place.
The Penang government was blamed for not tackling flood issues seriously after nine years under opposition rule.
However, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng refuted the claims saying Penang was inundated with 270mm of rain that Friday, which is equivalent to a month’s rain, and the highest ever in a single day.- Mkini
