Nurul Izzah to Najib: Do your homework before commenting on Reformasi

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak should do his homework before commenting on the Reformasi movement, advised PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar.

“We did not start Reformasi specifically to target (former prime minister) Dr Mahathir Mohamad. It is clearly an institutional reform agenda, culminating in a better system of governance.

“So Najib must do some homework, read some history and then care to comment,” she said in a press conference at PKR’s headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.

She was responding to Najib, who had yesterday made his first visit as prime minister to Permatang Pauh, which is the stronghold of jailed de facto opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Najib had said that the Reformasi movement is “no more because the opposition is now being led by a dictator, a pharaoh, who is very cruel (maha zalim)”.

Though he did not mention names, these were terms used to describe Mahathir during the Reformasi era, after he sacked Anwar as deputy prime minister in 1998.

However, since embarking on a campaign against Najib and quitting Umno, Mahathir has patched things up with Anwar and the two have agreed to a political collaboration in Pakatan Harapan.
