What happens when a scholar goes against Hadi

Former PAS veteran Ahmad Awang tasted how it felt to be sidelined when Umno held Selangor.
But what he faced after speaking out against PAS leadership pales in comparison, the former Persatuan Ulama Malaysia president told Malaysiakini.
One by one, the former PAS veep’s classes and lectures at about a dozen surau and mosques in Selangor were cancelled, he said.
It all started when he challenged PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for the top party post in 2015.
Ahmad, who is now Amanah adviser, said some places where had preached for 20 years now refuse to give him space to talk.
“Most of them cancelled my lectures but did not formally inform me. But there are those who sent messages, some called while others made excuses,” he said.
For example, he said, a religious centre in Selangor refused to allow him to lecture there purportedly because there was a clash in scheduling with another speaker. It happened three times in a row.
It was then that Ahmad found that his regular slot was taken by someone else.
Interestingly, he said, the replacement speakers at placed where he was sidelined were those from Hadi’s family.
“This happened even before I left PAS,” he said.
He said things worsened after the announced his resignation from the Islamist party he had dedicated decades of his life to.
“For some party members, resigning from PAS is like leaving Islam. Those who dare to join another party are treated like apostates,” he said.
He said there were also those from PAS who see a target on the heads of those who have left the party.

This did not feel very different from when Umno held control over the administration of mosques and surau in Selangor, he said.
In fact, it is even worse, he said.
“There are places which have barred me from speaking for more than two years now. When Umno governed Selangor, the longest I was barred was one year,” he said.
But Ahmad is heartened that there are still PAS members who have kept their wits and sympathised with his predicament.
“It is them who provide me with these information,” he said.- Mkini
