TMJ replaces national coach in first act as FAM president

Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Ibrahim has replaced the national football team's coach in his first act as Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president.
Tunku Ismail announced that national coach Ong Kim Swee would be replaced by Johor Darul Takzim's (JDT) former coach Mario Gomez.
"Kim Swee will be replaced with Mario Gomez and he can start work in FAM as early as this coming week," he told a press conference after the 53rd FAM Congress in Petaling Jaya.
Ong will instead be tasked to lead the Under-22 team, which is presently overseen by German coach Frank Bernhardt.
Asked what will become of Bernhardt, Tunku Ismail said he will discuss with the German coach on his fate.
"I want a different approach from what Bernhardt had shown for the Under-22 team.
"I will personally meet him and see what can be agreed on," he said.
In 2015, national coach Dollah Salleh resigned as coach of the national team after a 10-0 drubbing against United Arab Emirates.
Ong was subsequently asked to replace Dollah but Malaysia's performance had not fared any better.
In contrast, Johor-based club JDT, which is owned by Tunku Ismail, had seen a meteoric rise, winning the AFC Cup in 2015.
The turnaround of the Johor team helped Tunku Ismail build momentum for his second attempt at the FAM presidency.

He had lost the contest to Pahang crown prince Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah in 2014.
Tunku Ismail formally took over as FAM president at the 53rd FAM Congress in Petaling Jaya today.
He won the position unopposed after Umno information chief Annuar Musa withdrew from the race.- Mkini
