Ramasamy: Thaipusam collection highest ever with golden chariot

The Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB) collected over RM370,000 in donations during the Thaipusam festival earlier this month.
This is the highest collection in the last nine years, said PHEB chairperson P Ramasamy in a press conference today.
According to Ramasamy, the counting of the collection amounting to RM370,583.84 was completed by PHEB officers last Friday.
The figure is a far cry from about RM91,000 collected in 2008, and last year's RM188,814.70.
As for this year's collection - RM202,186.85 is for the Hilltop Murugan Temple while RM168,396.99 is for the golden chariot. The donations were received in the form of cash, cheques and jewellery.
Ramasamy said the proceeds from the golden chariot will go towards assisting the education of poor Hindu and non-Hindu students.
Ramasamy, who is also Penang deputy chief minister II, then took the operators of the silver chariot - the Nattukottai Chettiar community, to task for being "vague" about their collection.
The Chettiars, who run the Nagarathar Thandayuthapani temple, had announced that they had collected RM152,744.80 in cash and jewellery during Thaipusam.
Ramasamy said it was not made clear whether the collections was made via the temple or the silver chariot.
He then demanded the temple management to declare what the collection will be used for.

The Nattukottai Chettiars, who had been operating the silver chariot for over 100 years, had been on loggerheads with the PHEB ever since the latter announced it would operate its own chariot.
The Chettiars had also donated RM25,000 to four organisations.
On another matter, Ramasamy said diploma and degree students can start applying for financial assistance from the PHEB by filling out and submitting application forms at the board's office on Level 30 of the Komtar building by March 31.
He said PHEB assists about 300 students annually with funds between RM700,000 and RM800,000. - Mkini
