Group confirms with FMT that it will not attempt to submit the letter again and insists that the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 provides for assemblies without written notice.
PETALING JAYA: The #ShutdownJalanDuta protest on New Year’s Eve will proceed without further attempts to submit the letter notifying the police about the gathering, committee chairman, Shazni Munir Ithnin said.
“We tried our best to meet the police and we will not send it (letter informing of the protest) anymore,” he said when contacted by FMT.
The group previously tried to submit the letter to the Brickfields police station at 6.30pm last Tuesday, but was rejected because the letter was submitted after working hours.
“This is unacceptable! The Peaceful Assembly Act does not mention that such letters need to be handed over during working hours,” he said.
Shazni said that the group will target as many people as possible, and added that they already have 17,000 confirmed attendees.
“We have 17,000 people who signed the online petition and these are the people who are coming,” he said.
Shazni, also Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) Youth vice-chief, maintained that their protest is lawful in accordance with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, which states that an assembly does not require a permit, only that they should inform the police prior to the demonstration. He clarified that the group will inform the police verbally.
He further elaborated that an attempt to apply for a permit would have been futile anyway, as the police can abuse their powers to stop the protest from taking place.
“The police will acknowledge our application from the date of submission, and that gives them time to come up with excuses to stop us,” he said.
The #ShutdownJalanDuta group comprise of activists and students who plan to celebrate the New Year around the Jalan Duta toll vicinity to protest against the rising cost of living.
