Kit Siang's pol-sec may stand in Teluk Intan

TELUK INTAN DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang’s political secretary Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud may be fielded as the candidate in the Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election in an attempt to woo Malay votes following its adamant stance in rejecting hudud.

Dyana is one of the names to whom the party's candidate selection committee is looking at, said a source from the central leadership.

The source also confirmed that DAP member Hew Kuan Yau (right); Chong Zhe Min, political secretary to Perak DAP chief Nga Kor Ming; as well as former Jalong state assemblyperson Leong Mee Meng; were among the list of candidates to be considered by the committee.

The candidate might be announced this Saturday, two days before the Teluk Intan nomination day, the source told Malaysiakini.

Meanwhile, another source from the central leadership said the committee, which consists of acting party chairperson Tan Kok Wai, secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Lim Kit Siang, has yet to decide on the candidate.

Both Kit Siang and Tan however refused to divulge any information relating to the party’s candidate.

“I have nothing to say,” responded Kit Siang.

It is widely known that most of Kit Siang’s former political secretaries have been elected as people’s representatives, and they include Selangor senior exco member Teng Chang Khim and exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah, Penang exco member Chow Kon Yeow, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, and Batu Kawan MP Kasthuriraani Patto.

Dyana (left) joined the party in 2012 and later helped Kit Siang campaign during the 13th general election in Gelang Patah.

She was openly introduced by Kit Siang at DAP convention as his new political secretary right after GE13.

The 27-year-old full-time politician hails from Ipoh, although she is now based at Kit Siang’s Gelang Patah constituency.

“Of course, I am interested (to stand in Teluk Intan),” Dyana toldMalaysiakini, but admitted the party leadership hasn’t tipped her off about the candidacy.

“Though I am not from Teluk Intan and never really spent much time there, I have friends and family there,” she said.

The least controversial aspirant

Dyana is now in Bukit Gelugor to campaign for DAP candidate Ramkarpal Singh. She will join the campaign team in Teluk Intan in a day or two, said Dyana.

As the youngest of the four potential candidates, Dyana stands a chance in light of DAP’s firm stance in opposing hudud, which may have angered the Muslim community, as Malay votes consist of 38 percent of the electorate in Teluk Intan.

Such an arrangement may also pacify the Perak DAP leadership, who are allegedly not in favour of naming both Hew and Leong as the candidate. Dyana is said to be the least controversial compared with the other potential candidates.

The Teluk Intan by-election, the sixth to take place since last May’s general election, was called following the death of DAP’s Teluk Intan MP Seah Long Peng, 48, on May 1 as a result of bladder cancer.

Both DAP and BN have not announced their candidates for the seat, though Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong is a strong favourite for the seat that he had held between 1999 to 2008, when he lost it to DAP’s M Manogaran by a 1,470-vote margin.
