LABIS:The Election Commission (EC) today fixed Feb 26 for nomination day for the Merlimau state seat by-election, and if there is a contest, polling will be on March 6.
EC chairman Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said the EC had received official notification from the Malacca State Assembly Speaker on Jan 21 concerning the vacancy in the Merlimau state seat following the death of the incumbent assemblyman, Mohamad Hidhir Abu Hassan, on Jan 20.
“Subsequently, the EC had held a special meeting on the matter tonight and decided that a by-election must be held within 60 days of the date of the vacancy,” he said in a statement, released here tonight.
Umno information chief Ahmad Maslan had said that he is confident BN will retain Merlimau based on its excellent track record in several general elections in the past.
